Fit-for-task Assessments
Confirm a worker is ready for the physical demands of their role.
When a worker returns from injury, is placed on further restrictions, or says they can no longer perform their role without pain, you need an objective answer — not a guess.
Fit-for-task assessments are targeted physical assessments confirming a worker can safely carry out their role right now.

What’s included
A physical assessment of an employee’s capacity to safely carry out a job. Less formal than a functional capacity evaluation, and may not involve WorkCover at all.
Typically used when:

An employee injured outside work needs confirmation they’re ready for full duties

An employee on light duties is placed on further restrictions

An employee says they can no longer perform their role without pain

You need to determine whether temporary or permanent restrictions are required
How It Differs from a Functional Capacity Evaluation
A Fit-for-task Assessment is faster and more targeted than a full Functional Capacity Evaluation, and doesn’t necessarily involve a WorkCover claim.
It’s designed to answer one specific question: can this worker safely perform this role, right now? Referrals typically come from HR, return-to-work coordinators, or WorkCover case managers.
The Benefits
- Ensure employees returning to work can perform the inherent requirements of their role
- Assist with ongoing rehabilitation strategies
Works hand-in-hand with Task Analysis — when both are in place, decisions about restrictions and suitable duties are grounded in documented role demands, not assumptions.
