Elevated blood sugar (or hyperglycaemia) can have an immediate and lasting effect on your body, including ongoing soreness and a higher risk of injury. This is, in part, due to a process called glycation.
“Glycation occurs when sugar bonds with proteins to form compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs.) These compounds damage cells in the body by speeding up the oxidative process and changing normal cell behaviour.”*
Well, the body has an inflammatory response to high blood sugar levels, which in turn can present as soreness.
Assisting workers to manage their diabetes is a great way to help prevent further injuries and soreness, help them be more productive at work, and simply make them feel better!
